The terroir and biotypical products
Terroir. Climate. Human contact.
The word "terroir" comes from the French, and the best translation is "soil, land".
When we talk about wines and vineyards, the meaning goes beyond the literal, since as well as morphological, and so purely chemical values, it also includes aesthetic, artistic, metaphysical and philosophical factors.
For us in the Langhe, just as in France where the enological definition originates, the territory has enormous value, the earth in which the vine lives is fundamental. We could say that the meaning of the word "terroir" includes the geological matrix of the soil, the climate, the characteristics of the soil and human contact with the vine.
Our deep respect for the territory led us to become one of the founders of the National Association for Bio-typical Products which is based in La Morra. The "bio-typical" seal identifies wines with designation of controlled origin (DOC) and controlled and guaranteed origin (DOCG) produced in limited areas, characterized by specific climatic and soil conditions.
The three characteristics needed to obtain use of the seal are: no use of chemical fertilizers in the soil and the gradual reduction of the presence of any chemical substances; no use of leaf fertilizers which contain substances without any specific nourishment function, such as chelates, hormones or additives in general, in order to respect human health and the environment; use of bio-mineral agriculture, in which chemical fertilizers for the soil are replaced with leaf treatments with nourishment functions only.
A series of specific considerations for the health of the soil, which as a living organism has to be nurtured.
